1858 Remington Conversion: Joining Two Eras

The Remington Conversion is a classic example of a time in history where black powder guns were used to begin making guns for some of the first metallic cartridge options. It certainly is one of our most popular conversion models today! Using the 1858 Remington black powder model to convert to cartridge ammunition was an easy choice due to its reliable full frame design compared to some of the early Colt navy & army revolver conversions.
The Remington Conversion replica we offer today retains most features of the black powder originals, but with updates for cartridge ammunition. The hammer has been modified from the original black powder hammer so it can be used with the conversion ring firing pin design. The conversion ring sits perfectly in the rear of the frame and is secured with just a screw. The ring contains the firing pin parts and the loading gate. The frame has been modified to hold an ejector rod on the right side of the gun. The ejector rod assembly is a copy of one of the first versions so it must be manually operated when using it to eject shells as it does not have a coil spring like modern day revolver ejector rods. The loading lever has a cut out in it to hold the ejector rod in place while it is not in use. To use the ejector rod, you must lower the loading lever and then slide the ejector rod in and out of the cylinder chambers to poke out fired casings. Since the loading lever on this model is copied directly off the black powder loading lever it does still have the plunger on the end, so be sure not to lower the lever too much or the plunger will drop down into the cylinder chambers. If you are used to the black powder Remington models, you will notice that the cylinder pin only has one "ear" on the top of it. This is so that the side with no "ear" on it can sit flush beside the ejector rod on the right side of the gun.
On the .45LC caliber models we offer, you can change back and forth between .44 black powder and .45LC cartridges in a couple minutes! To prepare the gun for the cylinder change, you must remove the cartridge cylinder. Then take an appropriate screwdriver and remove the screw from the conversion ring. Carefully slide the conversion ring out of the revolver. Then you can install the black powder cylinder and you are ready to head to the range! The photos included here show the quick process of removing the ring so the black powder cylinder can be installed. To go back to cartridge, you simply re-install the conversion ring with the screw, and then install your cartridge cylinder back in the gun. The Remington Conversion is an outstanding replica that can be enjoyed still in both the modern and black powder shooting disciplines!
