1865 Spencer Carbine

Taylor’s is proud to offer a recreation of a firearm first produced by Christopher Miner Spencer, one of the leading figures of the machine tool industry. When Spencer originally produced an 1860 model carbine, it was different from any other firearm. In 1865, the gun maker delivered the 1865 Spencer Carbine, modified to correct flaws inherent in the original 1860 design. The feeding mechanisms in the spencer models are very sensitive to ammo type and overall length so manufactured ammo brands will work better if caliber standards are followed. The Spencer carbine model features a case hardened steel frame and lock, blued & case hardened parts, one barrel band retained by a band spring in the stock, butt stock magazine tube, rear ladder sight, fixed front blade sight, round barrel, a rear swivel for a sling. Wood to metal fit, soft metal on hammer, powder blowback. Review by C.W.

Front sight too low for 50 yd. and 100 yd. target w/accuracy loads using 335 gr. Hardball lead. Front forearm metal barrel strap too loose to stay in place. Powder blowback in bullet chamber causes jamming after 3 to 4 rounds, (have to swab to chamber round even with full length resizing). Hammer needs to be replaced after 100 reds.(more or less) due to indention at point of impact of firing pin mechanism. Wood and metal finishes are excellent. Love to shoot the rifle and will hunt deer confidentally with it. Overall, I am proud of the rifle and hope it will remain in our family forever. Your replacement and repair dept is excellent so far.
