Open Top Revolver - 1860 Army

Although it appears to be a conversion, the 1871-72 Open Top model was Colt’s® first revolver specifically manufactured to fire a centerfire cartridge by incorporating the loading gate in the frame. Since Colt® did not use percussion revolver parts, the revolver was manufactured as an entirely new model, first with Navy-sized grips, later with Army-sized grips. All Open Top revolvers come with a case-hardened forged steel frame, round barrel with front blade sight, modern ejector rod, and a rear sight notch on the rear of the barrel. The Army version includes a steel backstrap and triggerguard with a larger Army grip. Requires an FFL dealer to ship. Great fun, but don't plan to shoot 100 rounds an hour. Review by Rick Metzger

I bought a pair of these (in 45 Colt) on a lark, having just earned a good bonus. It took me a while, as a doofus who didn't read the manual first, to figure out how to remove the barrel from the receiver. RTFI. I bought the antiqued finish and at the range everyone thinks they are originals. The authentic sights seem rudimentary at first but these guns shoot as accurately as any fixed-sight ones I own, if not better. Very impressive to onlookers. The only shortcoming, I believe inherent to the design, is that the gun does not seem made for plowing through a couple of boxes of ammo in an hour or two. If you keep the cylinder gap where it ought to be when cold, it will narrow enough, probably from carbon buildup, to cause sluggish cycling. Not only do I think this is not a fault of Taylor's product, I think it instead is a compliment to their accuracy of reproduction. Just my opinion. These are very fun to shoot and you can impress the heck out of people with your 10-yard-plus accuracy. (Posted on 12/12/2018)
