Le Mat Cavalry

The Le Mat revolver is considered the most awesome hand-held firing weapon ever produced. This nine-shot revolver with a 20GA single-shot barrel was a favorite among Confederate cavalry officers. The Le Mat shot barrel is fired by cocking the hammer and flipping down the hammer nose to strike the lower nipple for the barrel. Unlike other wedge retained black powder revolvers, the Le Mat is easily taken apart by using the take down lever and unscrewing the whole barrel assembly. The Cavalry model features include a case hardened hammer and trigger, blued steel parts, checkered walnut two-piece grip, lanyard ring, and spurred triggerguard. This infamous revolver is must-have addition to any black powder collection! A conversion cylinder is not available for this model. History Lesson and Hell'va Hog Leg Review by Grey Smoke

Having put close to 450 (.454 caliber) lead ball and 50 ounces (.27) buckshot through my 1856 Pietta Le Mat, I can honestly vouch for the sturdy craftsmanship and reliability of this revolver - my first BP weapon. Additionally, I've had a 95 - 99% positive fire rate with very few failures.

One note to novice or "soon to be" Le Mat shooters: the actual I.D. of the smooth bore is between 18ga and 19ga . Make note of this as it becomes very important when choosing cards and wads (all 3) because they will not seat properly if simply selected as "20ga." I believe this information is included with some retailers' literature, but times have changed since my 2008 purchase ; best if you measure for yourself.

p.s. When is Taylor's going to make a conversion cylinder for this revolver ? (Posted on 6/12/2016)

The LeMat is a must have for any historical bp revolver collector. Far from being a Colt, awkward to cock and not well balanced, but such a beautiful ugly. Where else can you get a 10 shot .45 cal revolver and a 20 gauge single barrel shotgun in one package ? (Posted on 12/30/2015)
