The 1860 Army revolver was adopted as US government ordnance because of its lighter weight, improved balance, and superior ballistics. This 6-shot percussion revolver became very popular with mounted troops and went on to be the issued sidearm for the US Army for many years. The 1860 army snub nose model features a steel frame, shoulder stock frame cuts and screws, round barrel, brass loading rod included in the box, steel backstrap and triggerguard, and a flattop birdshead checkered walnut grip. The .36 version includes a half fluted cylinder, while the .44 version includes a rebated half fluted cylinder. A conversion cylinder is available for this model that is a drop-in conversion to smokeless ammunition. This uniquely 'Bulldog' version of the Colt 1860 seems oddly steampunk in its styling. Its weight & balance are similar to the modern S&W Model 19 .357 Magnum with a similar barrel length. I ordered the 44 cal. version along with a conversion cylinder. I am really impressed with the quality and fitment Pietta has achieved in the last few years since going to cnc machining. Some of the things I noted ,besides the fact it is a great shooting revolver, the case colors are more like the Colt colors, the arbor fit is precise, the barrel/cylinder gap is .002, the internals need no polishing, the bolt/trigger spring and hand spring have been modified for reliability and function and the wedge fits correctly and is easily removed. When I saw this the main reason I bought it was because of the unusual style and the availability of a 38LC cylinder. I prefer to only buy guns that allow me to shoot them also at Indoor Ranges. But with the receipt of this pistol, I am really appreciating better the Colt/Pietta translation of this unique pistol. The weight is perfect, and the action is very smooth. The quality of this revolver is excellent. Inspected and found the following:Price Value Quality
* Fit and finish was very good. Case hardening color was very good. Grip wood to frame
was good.
* Timing was perfect.
* Trigger pull out of box was 2.5 lbs.
* Action was smooth with no problems.
* Cylinder gap to barrel was 0.007".
* Arbor length was correct.
* Bolt to cylinder bolt stop was a correct fit.
* No metal flashing etc. inside frame. Can get by without slicking up action parts.
* Note: This model snub in .36 caliber is really a 1861 type, and would be called a
1861 New Navy Model.
Bottom line......very pleased with this Pietta product. They have come along way in
