1858 Remington Steel

The Colt 1836 patent expired in 1857, and the next year, Remington introduced a solid-frame design that was both elegant and reliable. The 1858 Remington became so famous that it was the prevailing choice of military officers following the Civil War. Its full-frame design still makes it a top choice for black powder shooters today as the cylinder can be removed without taking the firearm completely apart, unlike the Colt models. The steel remington features a steel frame, brass triggerguard, octagonal barrel, fixed front blade sight, walnut two-piece grips, and a smooth cylinder with safety notches cut in the top. A conversion cylinder is available for this model that is a drop-in conversion to smokeless .45LC/.45Schofield (for the .44 model) and .38SP (for the .36 model) ammunition. I bought the 5.5 inch barrel and shoot 30 grains of fff 777 powder with 10 cci caps. I've had problems in the past with factory nipples but not in this case. I run over 300 snares a week for Bobcats and coyotes and this is my favorite to carry with the cost per shot with the added boom!. Only problem is waiting for the smoke to clear! (Posted on 9/9/2019)

I use a pair of these 8" barreled monsters with Taylor's conversion cylinders from 44 BP to 45 Colt in local Cowboy Action matches, and they are accurate, reliable. And easy to use. Sometimes they need a little tuning when new, sometimes they don't, but they're not hard to work on by any means and parts are affordable too. My pair needed NO work at all, even the conversion cylinders dropped right in. I get a lot of compliments on their looks, even more on their speed of loading and reloading compared to they typical Colt SAA type pistols, and what few folk give me guff for the size (they're huge and heavy, yes) quickly hush when they see how well these things handle any load I run through them. Know your loads, keep them clean and maintained, and you have an affordable and sweet shooting piece of history that'll give years of service.

By the way, tested "speed reloading" and shooting with two conversion cylinders followed by two percussion cylinders all loaded to capacity and capped, on the bench - one gun, 20 rounds total, into the vitals area of a silhouette target from ten yards. Total time: 54.23 seconds. Try that with any Colt style smokewagon. (Posted on 8/18/2019)

I bought the 1858 recently. My 14 year old son loves historic firearms, and was impressed with this particular pistol in the movie, Pale Rider. He liked how quickly, Clint Eastwood could change cylinders for a reload. We took it to the range the day after we picked it up. I loaded it and ran a cylinder through it. Then instructed him on how to load it. Under my close supervision, he had a ball shooting this fine firearm. He was all smiles the whole time. A beautiful gun, with excellent fit and finish. I highly recommend this pistol.

I got the Uberti 5.5" model to go with my Pietta 1858 5.5" .36 cal. The Taylor Uberti is by far the better revolver - fit, finish, smooth action & quality bar none - worth the extra money! Review by Paul

I got the blued 1858 Remington with the 8" barrel and the conversion cylinder. I am a history buff and wanted to learn more about cap and ball as well as black powder cartridges like 45 Long Colt. This gun does it all. The fun of black powder and with a click, 45 LC as well. I love it and highly recommend it. Mild recoil and great accuracy from both loads. The fit and finish are impeccable.
