1858 Remington Old Silver

The Colt 1836 patent expired in 1857, and the next year, Remington introduced a solid-frame design that was both elegant and reliable. The 1858 Remington became so famous that it was the prevailing choice of military officers following the Civil War. Its full-frame design still makes it a top choice for black powder shooters today as the cylinder can be removed without taking the firearm completely apart, unlike the Colt models. The Old Silver remington features a white heat-treated engraved steel frame (cared for like blued steel), brass triggerguard, octagonal barrel, fixed front blade sight, walnut two-piece grips, and an engraved cylinder with safety notches cut in the top. A conversion cylinder is available for this model that is a drop-in conversion to smokeless .45LC ammunition. This is my second black powder gun. My 4th in the reproduction line 2 uberti (dakota and cattleman) and a pietta 1860 army. I am very happy with the remington. Excellent craftmanship. The engraving is very fine. Thank You Taylor's and company for fast, safe shipping. When Im ready for my lever gun you'll be getting a call. (Posted on 5/22/2019)

I was struck first by the beauty of the laser engraving of every visible part. The lasering must have been the last step because I can actually feel the ridges. I was then struck by the closeness of the fit between the cylinder, barrel, and the frame. I could not find any movement of the cylinder when the bolt is locked and ready to fire. A side benefit of the lovely silver frame is that it makes centering the blued front sight in the frame notch much easier.
This is by far the best of my three Pietta 1858 revolvers. (Posted on 1/16/2019)

If you were ever in the market for an engraved pistol, but didn’t want to sell the farm in order to buy one, this is the deal for you.
I have several dozen black powder pistols, from both Uberti and Pietta. For some reason, I have always thought Ubertis were slightly better regarding fit and finish. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised when I received this engraved Remington. It is a fine reproduction in every way.
Also, I was surprised at the quality and coverage of the engraving. Be advised, this engraving is of the very fine line type, rather than heavier, more shadowed type more commonly encountered. However, it is still very attractive; and great value for the money. The two tone blue/white metal finish also enhances the overall appearance. I hope Uberti applies this engraving and finish to some Colt reproductions, such as the 1860 Army. (Posted on 6/13/2018)

I just took it out today and with 40 grains of pyrodex was hitting nicely without filing sights. I highly recommend it. (Posted on 8/26/2017)
