1848 Whitneyville Dragoon

Developed in 1848, the Colt® Dragoon was issued in pairs as service firearms to members of the U.S. Army’s Mounted Rifles 1st Cavalry, the first of many units known as Dragoons. The dragoon was the corrected version of the walker. It was the door buster of all handguns of it era. It had the maximum power while being about half the weight when fully loaded as the cold walker. It was most impressive to me because of it sheer muzzle velocity. At any point before the Remington new model Army was released this would have been the gun to have. Considering most to gunman in that era carried more than one weapon this one would have been my primary carry. Though I would have probably also stuffed a police model or another .36 caliber handgun down the back of my trousers. If nothing else just for the weight difference and versatility of those weapons. But make no mistake the dragoon was king in its day. (Posted on 1/23/2016)
