Pietta 1851-1860 Army & Navy .44 Revolver Conversion Cylinder

This conversion cylinder converts steel frame Pietta 1851-60 Navy & Army revolvers from .44 black powder to .45LC/.45Schofield smokeless ammunition. Taylor's does not recommend shooting ammunition rated above 850 fps in this conversion cylinder. Due to the shorter frame length of these revolvers, some .45LC ammunition could be too long for the conversion cylinder if the factory does not follow standard OAL measurements. Reloading/loading is done by removing the barrel and then removing the cylinder cap from the cylinder. The cylinder contains 5 firing pins retained by threaded doughnuts. The cap is reinstalled by lining up the hole in the cap with the silver guide pin on top of the cylinder. If shooting black powder ammunition the firings pins must be removed and cleaned to avoid corrosion. This conversion has safety notches cut between each chamber to use when carrying cylinder with all 5 chambers loaded. No frame modification is needed, although minor fitting may be required due to gun manufacturer variations. Cylinders ship separate from firearms purchases.

I home-built a Pietta 1860 c/c frame and 1851 grip set with a 5" octagon barrel, specifically to add this conversion cylinder to. It's literally my favorite gun now, accurate and easy to handle, even carry concealed if the mood strikes. If the fit on the gun is right, you can pop out the barrel wedge and reload easier than you'd think, and keep to their note about keeping it to cowboy loads. I'm running 200 grain lead, both factory and reloads, at about 750 fps, and with this cylinder the empties practically fall out. Five shot cylinders tend to be very strong and stable platforms, and my little Pietta is averaging 2" groups or less to 25 yards, still rings the 16" gong all the way to 75. Nicest part is that these eliminate the fouling and cleaning aggravation of black powder and caps, and you still have the option of going back to the original cylinder anytime. For those who think e price too high, just think of it this way: you are getting a way to have a modern cartridge gun for less than the price of a new gun, and since you can still swap back, you're ending up with two guns in one for a heck of a price. I'm building more just like this! (Posted on 5/20/2019)

slipped right into the 1851, had to work on the bolt in the 1860 to get it to work.
I'm using Winchester and Fiocchi cowboy loads, and have to file the tip a bit to let the cylinder rotate. (Posted on 10/3/2018)

I purchased the 1851 navy 44 caliber colt earlier and the cylinder was a perfect fit. If it was engraved it would look like the original cylinder. (Posted on 9/10/2018)

I was really impressed with how well made and finished the cylinder is for the price. I installed it in an 1860 Pietta snubnose and at first it would not work. A little checking showed the bolt was not fully lowered when the hand contacted the ratchet tooth. Had to remove .005 from the top of the hand and everything was good to go. For the quality this is a deal at the price. (Posted on 8/28/2018)

I bought the Taylor's snubnose 1860 and love it. It works beautifully. I then ordered the 45lc conversion cylinder from Taylor's and it dropped right in,but I have a little hang up when the cylinder turns with the cocking of the hammer. The cylinder stop cutouts have some burs around the edges and I think the stop is catching on it(?) If I put the hammer to rest between the firing pins,it locks there and when I cock the hammer the cylinder turns smoothly from this position. Otherwise the fit and finish is top quality like the revolver. (Posted on 6/17/2018)

It's a bit of a tight fit on my 1851 .44 "Colt Navy," but it'll loosen up after a bit of use. I love the safety notches. (Posted on 1/27/2018)

The service at Taylors is top of the line, fantastic. Had mine fitted when I sent revolver in and it works like a charm. I used cowboy action .45 colt lN and it worked great. Taylors personnel are really great and answered all my questions. The gunsmith was very helpful and returned my revolver really quick. Thank you Taylors and Co. (Posted on 9/30/2017)

Fit right into my late model pietta 1860 revolver . No mods. After 30 rounds the cylinder turned even smoother. Just got to watch the overall length of your ammo for clearance.

Works fine in my 1860 Army, except that I load my own 45LC ( and they are to spec - 1.60" long), and this cylinder is just a hair short. I exepct I will need to use 45 Schofield in this cylinder (Posted on 5/17/2017)

Very well built. Did not fit my Pietta 1860 army, but did fit my Pietta Navy in .44 caliber. I assume do to manufacturers inconsistencies in the pistols. (Posted on 5/12/2017)

Dropped right in, I had already polished and smoothed the bolt on my Pietta so no worries about drag marks on the cylinders. The conversion cylinder dropped in, timed, locked up, and rotated into battery perfectly. My only criticism is that the edges of chambers were very sharp. A few minutes with an ultra fine polishing sponge resolved the issue and in all honesty it truly goes to show the accuracy that these cylinders are made with. A sharp edge like that only forms from precise milling. (Posted on 5/12/2017)

I like this product a lot. It makes it much easier and simpler to shoot your black powder revolver, yet it gives you the option to go back and shoot it with the original percussion cylinder. Mine had to be fitted, and was done free of charge. This was completed very quickly and professionally by the gunsmith at Taylor's and Company. My only issue is that it had to be fitted at all, but that is because Pietta has traditionally not made their firearms uniformly, and their parts usually have to be fitted. Also, the cylinder cost almost as much as the gun. I think the price is too high, but to me it was still worth the investment. I think it is an excellent product. (Posted on 4/6/2017)

Dropped right into my Pietta and worked flawlessly. Perfect timing. Great quality. Haven't fired it yet as the snow is up to my ass here, but will work up some .45 colt loads and pop it off in the spring. (Posted on 1/11/2017)
Conversion cylinder for Pietta 1860 army 44 cal. Review by Frederick

The cylinder was delivered promptly and was as stated, well finished and of high quality. I did have to send it along with my revolver as some minor fitting and adjustments were needed, this was done promptly and my revolver was returned to me in perfect condition ready to use in just a few days. I also have conversion cylinders for all my other revolvers and they are of the same high quality. The need for minor fitting on some revolvers is not due to a defect in the cylinder but due to minor variations in manufacturing, most of my cylinders just dropped in right out of the box with no fitting needed. If you want a quality product and great customer service Taylor's is the place to go. (Posted on 10/25/2016)

i called in my order to Taylors for a conversion finally. they looked so fun i could not resist! i was told on the phone depending on my year of pietta the cylinder could not time up when i drop it in. of course as my luck would have it the cylinder did not time up well so i called back. Taylors told me to send my gun in and they would fit it for free.

so i sent it in and when i got it back it worked like a charm and the gunsmith was super fast on the job. great service! (Posted on 8/3/2015)
